The Unique Return to the Bulgarian Letters

The Slavic alphabet and the Old Bulgarian literary language, created by the Holy Brothers Cyril and Methodius and based on the Bulgarian dialects from the IX century are Bulgaria’s paramount contribution to the human civilization. The Bulgarian medieval literature is the only area in our cultural history that enjoys a tremendous interest in Europe and the United States. Bulgarian scholars’ contemporary studies in this area are widely recognized worldwide.

Main Advantages of the Project to the Existing Typesets
In the last decades this is the first creation of Old Bulgarian typefaces, combined in a single artistic platform.

1| Extremely detailed preparatory work, including:
• Determining the requirements of the experts in Bulgarian studies working in this area;
• Finding consultants for the project: a team from the Center for Slavic-Byzantine Studies "Prof. Ivan Duitchev" and National Library "St. St. Cyril and Methodius"; Consultants: Prof. Axinia Djourova, Ph.D., Prof. Boryana Hristova, Ph.D., Prof. Vasya Velinova, Ph.D.;
• Basic research of the Glagolitic and Cyrillic manuscripts from X-XVII c.; primary sources for the proportions and the construction of the letters are: the Asseman Gospel, the Suprasal Collection, the Rheims Gospel, as well as old Cyrillic and Glagolitic printed editions.

2| Design - it is the work of Kantcho Kanev - a renowned typeface master both in the detail and in the basic principles.
The result - a set of Glagolitic and Old Bulgarian fonts is created, which is unique in the history of font design in Bulgaria and abroad.

3| The full character set has no analogue in the world’s font history - the Cyrillic alone contains 675 characters, including: letter versions, titles and above-line characters, various accents, aspirations, ligatures, etc. All of those have been witnessed in the manuscripts.

Above-line characters

Titles and Aspirations

Ligatures

UNIQUENESS

Full set of ligatures - 45 for Glagolitic and 34 for Cyrillic;
Maximum number of above-line characters - more than 130;
Precise control in the positioning of above-line characters and titles over and between the letters during typesetting.
As a software product, the font sets are developed using the latest digital typeface technologies - Open Type, PostScript, TrueType formats, following the international standards of product quality.

ENABLERS

The full set of characters allows the correct representation of the specific paleographic characteristics of manuscripts dating from various periods - the early texts (IX-X c.), as well as the Old Bulgarian ones (XIII-XIV c.), and even the late ones (XV-XVII) c.;
This allows the production of typographically complex editions while preserving the stylistic and graphic consistency in combining texts set in contemporary Cyrillic, Latin and Greek with Old Bulgarian Cyrillic and Glagolitic.
It allows the publication of scholarly works on the Bulgarian medieval written word as well as the popularization of the Bulgarian typeface from the ancient history to the present.
